ABSTRACT

From the translation of The Freud-Klein Controversies, the author studies their historical realities divided between Administrative Assemblies and Scientific Discussions, where the "Kleinians" were able to discuss their main theses. The author shows how the Controversies reached an impasse, when Edward Glover thought it would be possible to ally with Anna Freud to expel Melanie Klein from the British Psychoanalytic Society. What united the two Viennese women however was stronger. And other psychoanalysts did not agree with exclusions. James Strachey and a few others then laid the foundations of what was to become the Middle Group.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This article updates the previous text of the main author published in 2000, revisiting the scientific evidence that reaffirms the contribution of health to the quality of life of individuals and populations. More than the access to health services of any quality, it is necessary to face determinants of health in its entirety, which requires healthy public policies, an effective intersectoral articulation of public power and mobilization of the population. The authors revisit the emergence and development of health promotion, focusing on the analysis of the most promising health strategies for the increase in quality of life, especially in societies with high social and health inequalities, as in the case of Brazil, reinforced by the recent pandemic of COVID-19. Such strategies were concretized on healthy municipalities and intersectoral actions, in health and in all policies which confront social determinants, through their own foundations and practices that are closely related to innovations in public management for integrated and sustainable local development, in view of the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Objectives (SDG).

ABSTRACT

Abstract Tracing the pathways of cooperation in health in sub-Saharan Africa from hesitant exchanges to institutionalized dimensions from the 1920s to the early 1960s, this article addresses regional dynamics in health diplomacy which have so far been under-researched. The evolution thereof from early beginnings with the League of Nations Health Organization to the Commission for Technical Assistance South of the Sahara and the World Health Organization's Regional Office for Africa, shows how bilateral dimensions were superseded by WHO's multilateral model of regional cooperation in health. Alignments, divergences, and outcomes are explored with respect to the strategies and policies pursued by colonial powers and independent African states regarding inter-regional relations, and their implications for public health and epidemiological interventions.

ABSTRACT

We make a historical review of the Congresses of Anatomy of the Southern Cone. At the beginning of the year 1999, an agreement was established between the «Sociedad Chilena de Anatomía¼ and the «Asociación Rioplatense se Anatomía¼ to jointly conduct the scientific congresses of both societies. A few months later, also at the proposal of Drs. Mariano del Sol and Ricardo Losardo, a new entity was requested to be called initially "Congress of Anatomists of the Southern Cone", whose purpose would be to gather not only Argentine, Uruguayan and Chilean anatomists, but also incorporate morphologists from other countries in South America, including Brazilians and Paraguayans. In this way, the joint realization of the three congresses (Chilean, Rioplatense and the Southern Cone) began with a massive participation of the morphologists of numerous countries of our continent. The "Congresses of Anatomy of the Southern Cone" (so called since the II Congress held in Chile) have normally been held every year, often jointly with the Argentine, Chilean, Brazilian and Pan American Congresses of Anatomy, among other events. Upon the 21st anniversary of the beginning of this fruitful and beneficial scientific union we wanted to capture in this article the origins of these Congresses of Anatomy of the Southern Cone, as well as the reasons that led to its creation. Likewise, the meetings held in the first 21 years (1999-2019) were listed, indicating their dates, headquarters and presidents.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Throughout the twentieth century, the profound changes that have taken place in Medicine can only be wholly explained if observed from a historical perspective, for they have always occurred in response to external influences, some scientific and technological, others of a social nature. Modern Family Medicine is one of the many new disciplines that have developed during medical history, and we critically discuss the last 40 years of primary health care in Portugal, which started in 1971, long before the Alma-Ata Declaration (1978). Along the way, in 2005, the Primary Health Care Reform emerges in Portugal, along with the new family health facilities, which until September 2019, attended about 94 % of Portuguese citizens, i.e., 9,5 million people. At the end of this course, in solidarity and voluntarily, this Reform inspired another one in Brazil, in Rio de Janeiro, in 2009. Finally, we present the challenges pointed out in the 2018 Astana Declaration, among them, the issue of the workforce in primary health care as an essential factor for the performance and sustainability of health systems.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Michel Foucault's preoccupation with medicine, its history and its impact on society, is a constant in his work. The goal of this study is to contrast the content of the lectures Foucault gave in Rio de Janeiro, in October 1974, with the preparatory notes for them which are part of the archival holdings acquired by the National Library of France. One of the key questions in those lectures is the relationship between ethics and contemporary social medicine. This question, analyzed from Foucault's point of view, constitutes the background and ultimate interest of this article.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective: to recount the story of the Simpósio Nacional de Diagnóstico de Enfermagem (National Nursing Diagnosis Symposium), from 1991 to 2018, describing the official themes and main recommendations; and reflect on the construction, in this process, of a specific field of knowledge for Nursing. Results: the manuscript became a historical study, using official documents resulting from the thirteen Symposiums conducted in the period from 1991 to 2018 as the primary source of empirical data. The outcomes were divided into two stages, from 1991 to 1992, when the event was linked to Interest Groups in Nursing Diagnosis; and from 1996 to 2018, when ABEn Nacional took over the organization and execution of the event. Final considerations: the socialization and exchange of knowledge about systematization of care, Nursing Process and nursing terminologies, themes focused on SINADEn, contributed decisively to the construction of a fruitful field of knowledge for Nursing.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The Red Cross, an international organization originally founded in Europe, promoted in different Latin American countries the formation of national societies under the humanitarian and neutral principles in relation to the treatment of prisoners in times of armed conflicts. After the First World War and under the influence of the United States, the League of the Red Cross Societies was fostered to design and apply sanitary and social actions in times of peace. Based on that boost, different Pan-American Congresses were held in the twenties and thirties in Buenos Aires, Washington and Rio de Janeiro, which had an agenda that coincided with the principles of this international organization and, at the same time, allowed the elites and the state and private organisms of different fields to unify in pursuit of intervening in different social sectors.
